The term “steward” is not one we often hear anymore, outside of the religious context. As Christians we understand that we are called to protect and represent God’s interests here on earth. Stewards reflect God’s love, character and purpose. In other words, God’s stewards are to demonstrate what He is like. Creation and redemption place stewards in close relationship with their Master, as He daily teaches them how they can represent Him. Stewards come from all races, tribes, languages, and nations to be members of God’s family.
The first step in being a steward is to recognize that God has a master plan for His stewards, as outlined in His sacred word. He gives us life and invites us into intimate partnership with Him, where through His word He teaches His stewards principles of His kingdom. This partnership begins with accepting Jesus Christ as Saviour and entering into the joy of salvation. As we walk with Him we learn lessons of trust as we accept Him as Lord or Owner of every aspect of our lives.
The Bible teaches that stewardship includes every area of our life: our physical bodies and mental faculties, our skills and time, and even protective care of the environment in which we live. When we love God with all of our heart, mind and soul, all of our affairs reflect our saving relationship to God. Therefore, with this all-inclusive view of stewardship, Jesus is also very much Lord of our financial resources.
The Bible tells us that only a person who has a relationship with God can truly partner with Him. To become a steward we must acknowledge God’s ownership and sovereignty over every aspect of our lives. Faithful stewardship is an expression of our gratitude for a saving relationship with our Saviour, and a recognition that all we have belongs to Him. We become stewards when we submit our lives totally to Him. When we give our heart to Jesus, we become a steward of His Kingdom and when we pray and follow His word we experience the unspeakable blessings He generously bestows on those who walk in partnership with Him.
